The Magnificent Name of Jesus
Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
The name of Jesus is central to the doctrine and practice of the New Testament church. Prayer was made in Jesus’ name. Healing was accomplished in Jesus’ name. Demons were cast out through the authority of Jesus’ name. Preaching and teaching were delivered in Jesus’ name.
The early church recognized that their authority and power to do the work they were called to do was encapsulated in the name of Jesus. Through His name they could invoke the authority of His presence. They could speak as Christ’s body in the earth through His name. They could bring Him tangibly into their midst by the application of His name. They could ask anything in His name and confidently receive the answer. The name of Jesus was the key to the power and authority of God, so they acknowledged that name continually. Literally, the early church fulfilled Paul’s admonition:
